Steps are blocks that are found in Creative mode, Survival mode and Alpha mode.

In Survival mode, you can get Steps by mining Coal Ore. Once mined, it'll show up as a Step block instead of Coal like in Alpha mode. In Alpha mode, you can use three Cobblestone in one row in a Workbench. You'll receive 3 Step blocks from this recipe.

Step blocks were formerly called stairs until a new stair block was added. Placing two Steps on top of one another makes it a full block and breaking it will only yield one Step instead of the two used to place it.
